I thought I’d make another document depicting my earlier search for the dogs in January after Kitah went missing for 4 days and Oscar for 5 days. They got lost during a thunderstorm and I walked and climbed about 20km a day. When I got too tired in the afternoon I was cycling and driving to look for my babies. Sometimes I slept in the van at night so I would not have to go all the way back to base camp (my caravan, the portable as my kitchen and the shipping container to sleep in). Kitah found her way back after 4 days and we found Oscar (the Doberman) on the 5th day only about 500m from base camp. He’d fallen down a ravine and into a cave he could not get out of. Lucky there was a spring running through it otherwise he would not have survived that long (He lost 3kg). It took me more than 3 hours to get 150m from the track (on Mt. delta) down the one side of the valley to get to him and another 3 to carry him up the cliff on the other side (Mt. gamma). Then Oscar started hyperventilating and I was scared he might get a heart attack so I rested with him for an hour. But it got dark and we missed the great southern track twice (it zigzags up the hill) - some of my roads are very overgrown and covered with fallen trees - impossible to walk at night or even recognize as a road in the dark. I only had one torch which went flat (I did not expect to be away till dark), so we waited for the moon to come up, and it did, but because this hill was too steep for the moonlight to get there we were still in the shade. So we had to go over the hill and cross a valley to another mountain (Mt. beta) where I knew we’d hit a cleared road we could walk at night. We got back to base camp after midnight. Next day to the vet. Oscar had injuries all over. Apparently he must have got jammed somewhere and because of lack of circulation his flesh died off (and fell out later). He developed a hole nearly the size of my fist on his chest. The vet said he must be a very positive and happy dog to have survived at all. He sure is a happy dog. He was too weak for an operation so we left it as is and I cared for him.
